These (above) are the plants I grow, all perennials and grown to sell as mail order plants . I have grown plants for over 25 years starting off growing chrysanthemums outside as cut flowers. This is simply a way of sharing some knowledge with anyone that might be interested. This is supposed to be a part-time occupation as I also have another more conventional job as a postman. But I spend many more hours with the plants, as you can imagine.
The season begins and what a cruel winter it has been. I've lost a fair few plants, those that are slightly tender, like the dieramas (angels fishing rods) and alstoemerias. Still, it was cold, I recorded -14 'c outside and -6'c in the tunnel, that was the coldest night.
Today involves some weeding of the weediest pots I can find , namely monarda 'mohawk' that is rapidly disappearing beneath the canopy of bittercress which is the most common of weeds here. Then Geranium sanguineum 'tiny monster' is ready to split up into as many viable divisions as I can make from about six pots. I think I made about 25 divisions, which was good as its not one of the easiest to divide; lets hope they all make it. I use a Stanley knife to cut through the woody part, this make it easier to ensure there is some root and shoot together on each division. The knack with this variety, because it usually gives you little to work on when trying to divide, is to bury the original plant(s) right up to their necks in their pots and leave for several months. The plants send out roots from around the growing stems near the top of the pots, giving lots of opportunity to make many divisions (see below).
